Work Experience & School Leavers

Work Experience As an Accountant

As part of our career development vision, we believe in fostering a passion for accounting among young students.

We regularly host learners from various local high schools who wish to find out what a career in accounting is really like.

The Grade 11 Work Experience Programme forms part of schools’ Life Orientation syllabus, and we couldn’t be happier to offer budding “Bean Counters” an immersive, fun, and informative experience with our team.

There is a wide variety of careers under the umbrella of the accounting profession, and we believe that, by offering young learners practical insight, we are helping them to make informed career decisions.

It is always rewarding to hear how those involved in the programme value their experience.

If any of them decide to pursue a career in the field, we are honoured to have been one of the elements that shaped their paths.

  • Financial advisors must meet the FSCA Fit and Proper requirements. This includes a recognised qualification on the FAIS Qualification List, completion of the Regulatory Examinations (RE5 and, where applicable, RE1), and registration with an authorised Financial Services Provider (FSP). Different product categories - life insurance, investments, and short-term insurance - may have specific qualification requirements.

  • Yes. Many advisors begin under supervision while completing their regulatory exams and product-specific training.

During this period, you gain practical experience in advising on life cover, investment products, and short-term insurance while working toward full compliance within the prescribed timeframes.

  • Advisors can specialise in life insurance (risk and estate planning), investments (retirement, wealth accumulation, and preservation), and short-term insurance (personal and commercial risk cover). Over time, many advisors expand into multiple product categories to offer holistic financial advice.

  • Advisors can grow from supervised roles into fully qualified advisors, senior specialists, or practice leaders.

With experience, you may focus on high-net-worth clients, corporate benefits, or niche risk solutions, or progress into management, mentorship, or independent practice ownership within an established FSP structure.

Are You Looking for a SAIPA Training Contract?

A professional accountant is someone who works as an accountant in practice, commerce, industry, government, or academia. A professional accountant in public practice offers accountancy and allied services, excluding auditing, to the general public and the business community, especially in the SMME sector.

There are three steps to qualify to become a Professional Accountant (SA):

  • 1. Academic Qualifications

  • 2. Register as a Trainee

  • 3. Write Your Professional Evaluation (PE) Exam

  • The duration of the SAIPA training contract is 3 years.

  • A candidate can start a training contract upon completion of a relevant degree, or study part-time through UNISA and begin a training contract immediately.

  • Once a trainee has completed their degree and obtained practical experience by completing a three-year learnership with an SAIPA-accredited training centre, they are required to write and pass the SAIPA Professional Evaluation (PE) Examination.

This determines a trainee’s ability to integrate academic knowledge with the practical skills required in the workplace.

Once the above requirements have been met, the person can register as a Professional Accountant (SA) at SAIPA.

  • A prospective SAIPA trainee must either have, or be studying towards, a B.Com Degree from an SAIPA-accredited tertiary institution.

The degree must include the following core subjects:

    • Financial Accounting 3

    • Taxation 1

    • Auditing 1 OR Internal Auditing 2 OR Internal Control and Code of Ethics

    • Corporate Law 1 OR Commercial Law 2

    • Management Accounting 1/Financial Management 1
